According to the Western Cape Government, the Manenberg police precinct had a 311.1% increase in the number of attempted murder cases compared to the previous quarter. Interpersonal violence, gang-related crimes, and sexual offences plague women across the province and the community in Manenberg are particularly vulnerable to gender-based violence in SA.
The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC), based in Manenberg, opens its doors to survivors of abuse every month and intends to create a safe society for women and children empowered to exercise their full rights. Joining SBCWC in the fight against gender-based violence for this year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign and beyond is Secura and AURA. Together, they have equipped 500 women in Manenberg with subscriptions to Secura’s award-winning geo-security armed response app.
No South African Should Become a Statistic
Rising crime statistics threaten the welfare of women in Manenberg, the province of the Western Cape, and across the country. As of May 14, 2021, 9 518 people were raped between January and March, according to SAPS. The statistics highlight that of 6 893 of these rape incidents, 4 130 of them occurred at the home of the victim or the alleged rapist.
Secura firmly believes that no South African should fall victim to these statistics, launching the Secura App as a tool for women and all South African citizens to receive armed response support at their location within minutes of triggering the in-app panic button.
With over 3 000 call-outs and over 1 500 dispatched call-outs per month, Secura helps South Africans in all provinces receive critical armed response support to curb crime statistics and fight gender-based violence in SA.
How Secura Helps South African Women
The Secura App is affordable, easy-to-use, and integrates the powerful geo-security technology powered by AURA to give women across the country access to an on-demand network of reliable armed response teams closest to their location.
With an average response time of 5 minutes, the Secura App remains one of the leading crime response platforms on the market. Built on the backend of AURA’s dynamic technical features, the app provides users with access to more than 280 security companies across all nine provinces.
Secura, AURA, and SBCWC Partner to Protect Women in Manenberg
As Secura aims to protect all women across the country, there came the opportunity to partner with SBCWC for this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The initiative aimed to provide women in Manenberg without previous knowledge of the platform or the financial ability to use it access to full Secura coverage. To do so, Secura and AURA donated 500 subscriptions to the centre.
“This wonderful collaboration will ensure that every survivor and her children leaving the Saartjie Baartman Centre over the next year will be afforded not only wide-ranging protection but also peace of mind while she is navigating the oft-times difficult process of setting up a new life. We are extremely grateful to Secura and AURA for their support and generosity.”
- Bernadine Bachar (Director, Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children)
Secura Continues to Fight Against Gender-Based Violence in SA
While the donation of 500 Secura App subscriptions to survivors of abuse in Manenberg, in partnership with AURA and SBCWC, is a step towards reducing gender-based violence statistics, it is not the end of Secura’s drive to equip all South Africans with quality safety solutions. In fact, it is only the beginning.
Moving into 2022, Secura will continue to offer premium geo-security to South Africans at affordable prices. The rollout of vouchers and family plans as a part of Secura’s packages ensure that more South Africans can easily connect to our network of armed response companies. The successful partnership with SBCWC during the 16 Days of Activism campaign is proof that future partnerships with similar organisations can be integral to the fight against gender-based violence in SA.
